SJA Joins “Onigiri Action” at Local High Schools

Written by Michiko Okuma

SJA joined the Onigiri Action in Parrish-sensei's Japanese classes again this year at Washington-Liberty HS and Yorktown HS.

Students came to the table one by one to get rice on a plastic wrap and put their favorite ingredients: tuna, Umeboshi (plum pickles), Furikake (seasoning), and Natto (fermented soy beans).

Then, they made the shape into a ball or triangular shape in their palm.  After taking off the wrap, put Nori (seaweed) at the end.

Saying  "Itadakimasu," finally the students started eating!

Everybody had a bit of a hard time shaping but no matter how the shape turned out, it was yummy!!

I was surprised that many of them tried to taste "Natto" without any hesitation!! That was amazing.

Everybody seemed to enjoy the rice ball for sure!  "Gochiso sama deshita."
