Join us for an informative and engaging session in collaboration with the Embassy of Japan, where we’ll explore the world of international education opportunities in Japan

An Intimate Tea Ceremony with Master Kihachiro Nishiura
Come join us for a special Japanese matcha tea ceremony presentation led by the renowned Master Kihachiro Nishiura, creator of the Nishiura Style. This in-person event offers a smaller group of participants the unique opportunity to experience Japanese culture up close and personal. Don't miss out on this chance to learn from a master and enjoy a moment of peace and serenity in the midst of your busy day.
The address will be provided after sign-up, with the venue a short 10~15 minute walk from the Pentagon City Metro Station in Arlington, Virginia.

SJA at Awesome Con
SJA is presenting a promo booth at AwesomeCon this April! AwesomeCon has everything from comics, to cosplay to legos to movie stars! Awesome Con takes place from April 4th-6th.
Interested in going but don't want to spend the $120 for a 3-day badge? Volunteer with SJA! We will be having a promo booth at the con and need volunteers to run it. When your shift is done you'll be able to explore and experience Awesome Con!

SJA at the Sakura Matsuri Japanese Street Festival
Join SJA at the Sakura Matsuri Japanese Street Festival!
Volunteer with SJA to attend Sakura Matsuri for free!
SJA will have a booth at the Sakura Matsuri again this year! Come join us to learn Origami, play with Kendama (a traditional Japanese toy), try quizzes about Japan, or simply speak Japanese! We look forward to seeing you at our booth when you come to Sakura Matsuri on April 12 & 13, 2025!

Karuta @ Weekly Japanese Conversation Class

This week’s meeting will focus on a demonstration and playing of Karuta, with Karuta expert Mitsumi Stone! Mutsumi Stone, the leader of the group and the founder of a NPO called GO! KARUTA, is very enthusiastic about promoting karuta.
She holds a booth at many Japanese festivals like Shinshun Matsuri, Sakura Matsuri, and so on. She also visits Japanese classrooms and lets students play the hyakunin-isshu karuta.

Youth Japanese Language and Culture Class (Beginner to Advanced)

Do you want to study Japanese and learn about Japanese culture? Please join our beginner through advanced Japanese language class for youth (elementary, middle, and high school students). Classes will be offered online via Zoom. Classes are free, but spots are limited, so registration is required. Register here!
Dates: 3rd Sunday of each month: July 21, August 18, September 15, October 20, November 17
Time: 6:00-6:45 p.m. EST
Location: online via Zoom
Level: beginner to advanced
Target: youth (elementary, middle, and high school students)
You can join just one, or join all the classes offered! The class’s instructors will be Juliana-sensei, Sarah-sensei, Liz-sensei, Maru-sensei, Yoshimi-sensei, Miki-sensei, and Emiko-sensei.

Arlington-Setagaya Youth Exchange

Are you interested in Japan? Do you study Japanese or want to communicate with Japanese students in Tokyo? SJA is hosting a youth language and culture exchange program with Setagaya, Tokyo by Zoom! You can practice Japanese and help Japanese students practice English. It’s a monthly event, so you can choose which dates to register for—come once or come every time! It’s really flexible and each session is independently conclusive, so you don’t have to worry about missing a session. And it’s free!

Origami Workshop
February Origami Workshop!
Join to learn the simple pleasure of origami crafts via 45-minute online workshop. Please register first and you will receive a Zoom link. The workshop will be suited for students of any age from kindergarteners to retirees looking for a new hobby. A great opportunity for a family activity as well. All skill levels are welcome!
The theme for this month’s session is Valentine’s! (Themes/models are subject to change.)
What you will need for the workshop:
Origami paper, preferably 6 inch x 6 inch (15 cm x 15 cm). Other sizes are OK too.

New Year's Festival
Save the Date! January 26, 2025
The Japanese New Year's Festival (Washington Shinshun Matsuri) is coming to Arlington for the first time!
SJA is co-hosting this event along with JCAW (Japanese Commerce Association of Washington, D.C.), Tanpopo Gakuen, and Washington Japanese Language School.
You can try Hyakunin Isshu karuta, calligraphy, origami, and other traditional Japanese games such as Sugoroku and Shateki (shooting gallery), as well as a children's shopping arcade. Snacks will also be available for purchase in the food court.
Please note that we do not accept cash for payments for toys, snacks, refreshments, or other items.
Date: Sunday, January 26, 2025, 11am to 3pm
Venue: George Mason University Mason Square (Arlington Campus)
3351 Fairfax Dr., Arlington, VA. 22201 (near the Virginia Sq-GMU Metro station (Orange and Silver Lines))
No pets allowed except service animals.
Visitor parking is available for a fee in a limited capacity.
The garage entrance is located on the other side of the main entrance (Please see GMU Arlington Campus Map).
Admission: $16 (including $1 fee) non-refundable; Tickets are available via online presale only.
Tickets not required for children 6 and under.
The tickets can be purchased through "Admission Ticket Purchase Site." The ticket sales will close on Friday, January 24th at 12pm, or when sold out.
The sales will conclude once all tickets are sold, regardless of the deadline. To secure your spot, we recommend completing your purchase at your earliest convenience.
