Partnerships & Funding

Study Japanese in Arlington has collaborated with many organizations over its first five years, including the Mid-Atlantic Association of Teachers of Japanese, the Japan America Society of Washington DC, the National Landing Business Improvement District, and the Arlington County Library. SJA has supported indirectly the sister school relationship between the Arlington Career Center and Technical High School and the Tokyo Metropolitan Horticultural High School in Setagaya ward since it started in 2018. In 2020, SJA created formal partnerships with individuals and organizations whose activities are compatible with SJA’s mission to promote Japanese language and cultural study for free or at low cost especially among children, youth and families who otherwise may not be able to access these classes, programs or events. These partnerships are reviewed annually.

Our first two formal partnerships are:

  1. Naoko Kamioka, freelance youtuber of origami instruction for all kids, Fold It! (since 2021)

  2. Asian American Youth Leadership Empowerment and Development (AALEAD) This organization serves the DMV with a large base in Northern Virginia (since 2022)

SJA also engages in annual fundraising to cover our operating expenses and to expand our free programming. We wish to thank our largest donors since we started in 2018:

  1. The Japan Commerce Association of Washington, DC Foundation

  2. Arlington County Arts

  3. The Embassy of Japan

  4. The Japan Foundation

  5. The Mendis Family

We also rely on smaller contributions from many supporters in Arlington and the DMV.
